It had been a year and a half since Heath Simmons died, leaving his old boyfriend Nick Huppe alone. Nick was now 16 and he could still remember the exact moment when Heath left him. It was as vivid in his mind now as it was minutes after it happened:
Flashback: He sat next to Heath in the hospital room as he lay, hooked up to a life-support system.
“Why did you have to get mixed up in that fight, Heath?” Nick asked out loud, knowing perfectly well that Heath could not hear him.
Heath had gotten into a fight with a gang that was terrorizing Nick for being gay. Nick had begged him not to, but Heath wouldn’t stand for it. Heath had put up a good fight for a while, but the gang fought dirty as hell, they out numbered him by 4 and had all picked up pipes. By the end of 10 minutes Heath lay unconscious and bloody on the ground and the gang members had fled. Nick had tried to stop them, but one quick knock in the back of the head knocked him out too, but they did not beat him like they had to Heath. When Nick awoke there was a crowd around the two of them and the ambulance was putting them into stretchers to be taken to the hospital.
In less than five minutes they were in the E.R. It was then when Nick noticed that Heath wasn’t awake yet. He tried to ask the doctors what was wrong with him, but they had to keep him calm. They gave him some anesthesia gas and Nick fell into sleep once again.
Again he awoke, but this time there were no doctors, but his family was there. They were all crying. He looked to his left and saw Heath lying still in his bed. His family noticed that he was awake and they all went to hug him and cry some more. He tried to make them stop and ask how Heath was doing, but it was in vain. After some time they stopped and he realized that Heath’s parents were there too, but they were beyond tears.
“How is Heath?” Nick asked frantically.
Everyone nervously eyed each other as if they were deliberating on telling him.
“Nick…,” his father began, “There have been some difficulties with Heath. He was beaten very badly and he sustained a lot of head trauma. He has been in a coma. And… they’re not sure if he’s ever going to wake up,” his father struggled to say.
At these words, Heath’s parents began to cry and rock back in forth of each other’s arms. Nick’s mother went to comfort them.
“Wh–What?” Nick asked in disbelief, “no, it can’t be. It can’t!” He began to yell as tears started to streak down his face.
His father sat and hugged his son.
“I know, Nick, it’s a very hard fact to accept, but there is still a chance,” his father said hopefully.
Nick didn’t want to talk any more, he huddled into a ball and cried. His parents tried to talk to him, but he wouldn’t listen. They decided it was best to leave him to rest. Nick cried for an hour before he fell asleep again. When he awoke the room was still empty. He decided it was time for him to face what had happened to Heath. Slowly he stood up and walked to Heath’s bedside. The bruised and battered face of his loved one brought yet more tears to his eyes.
“Why did you have to get mixed up in that fight, Heath?” he asked again.
He sat next to his boyfriend’s bed for hours, watching as the doctors and nurses walked in and out monitoring Heath’s statistics. His parents had visited a few times that day, but every time they did, Nick asked them to leave him with Heath.
A week passed and Heath still showed no sign of waking up. By the second week Nick hardly slept, he just sat next to Heath rocking back and forth begging him to wake up. A month had passed and Heath’s parents made a painful decision, they were going to pull the plug on Heath’s life support. As Mister and Misses Simmons walked into the doctor’s office to tell him what they had decided on, Mrs. Simmons collapsed at the doorway and began to wail in pure agony. Her father didn’t look so good himself, it looked as though he had slept even less than Nick in making this decision.
Nick did not hear about the decision until the day of the procedure, when his parents came in to gently break the news to him.
“Nick, son, I have something I have to tell you,” his father began, “It’s been a month and the doctors don’t see a recovery coming for Heath. His parents have decided to… to let him pass on,” his father said searching for the gentlest words possible.
Nick looked at his father with his tired, shadowed eyes and for the first time he actually realized he would never see Heath alive again. His heart felt as though it had been put through a paper shredder. He was worlds away from crying. A single tear fell from his eye and he laid down and looked at the ceiling with blank eyes.
“Dad, can I have some time alone, please?” Nick asked in a harsh voice that he had developed from lack of rest.
“Sure son, no problem,” his father replied as he gently smiled.
Mr. Huppe walked out of the room. Nick stood up and walked over to Heath.
“It should have been me. They were hassling me, not you. Oh God! Why didn’t they kill me instead!?” Nick wailed as he embraced the unconscious body of his lover.
Hearing the cries, the doctors and parents re-entered the room.
“Nick you are going to have to calm down,” his doctor said.
“Calm down? You are going to kill my boyfriend!” Nick yelled.
The room went silent. Both sets of parents knew about their sons’ relationships, but the doctor had no idea.
“Oh, I see. Nick, I know this is very hard for you, but you have to understand, this is the best thing for Heath,” the doctor said in a soothing voice.
“How? How can dieing be the best thing for him?” Nick spat back.
“Try not to be so angry Nick. None of us can even comprehend what Heath is going through right now. Imagine being trapped in a nightmare and not knowing what is real or fantasy,” the doctor explained.
Nick looked away from the doctor and sat on his bed. He couldn’t stand the fact that Heath was suffering more. But he still didn’t know if he could let him go. Either way it was going to happen, it was not his choice.
“Nick, we have decided to do this today, we have to give his parents some time with him alone, can you come with me for about an hour? I promise you can have some private time with him afterwards,” the doctor said.
Very hesitantly, he agreed. He had to let Heath’s parents have some time to say good bye. He got up slowly and gave a hug to both Heath’s parents. Then, he followed the doctor out of the room.
Chapter 2- Old Scars Still Hurt Part 2
Nick sat in the doctor’s office for about an hour talking to the doctor. It had taken a while to calm him down, but in the end he was able to talk coherently.
“Nick, it’s always hard when someone you love has to go, but you have to understand, there is nothing more we can do for him. This is what he would have wanted, Nick,” the doctor spoke softly.
“I know… I just can’t find the strength to face the truth, I’m never going to see him again,” Nick said as he almost cracked into sobs of anguish.
“Well, Nick, its been about an hour, would you like to spend some time with Heath, or would you like to just get it over with?” the doctor asked trying to be light.
“I want to spend some time with him,” Nick said without a trace of doubt in his already weak voice.
“Ok. Just so you know, even though he is in a coma he might still be able to hear you,” the doctor said, hoping that it would help.
“Thank you,” Nick said simply.
The two exited the room and walked into Heath’s room. Mr. And Mrs. Simmons were sitting next to the bed holding Heath’s hands. They looked up at the two with sad eyes and nodded. They got up and left the room in each other’s arms.
“Ok, Nick, you have an hour. I wish I could give you more time, but we have to do this today,” the doctor said as he exited the room.
Nick walked to Heath’s bedside and looked upon his beaten, yet still beautiful face. He slowly raised his hand and held Heath’s. He sat and began to rub his friend and lover’s hand.
“Oh God, Heath, I don’t know what to say or do,” Nick said, hoping that his love could hear him.
“I want you to know, that no matter what happens, no matter how much time passes by, I will always love you. You showed me what it was like to be loved by someone. If it weren’t for you I probably would have never come out. I owe you so much. And now I will never be able to return the favor,” he continued.
He sat and talked to Heath’s apparently unconscious body. He reminisced about the good times they shared, as well as the bad. He looked at the clock and saw that his hour was nearly up. He looked sadly at his lover’s face and began to move towards him. He laid one simple kiss on his lips.
“I love you,” he said as he began to leave the room.
He went to the lobby where his parents were still trying to console Heath’s parents. As he entered they all looked up and looked at the doctor.
“It’s time,” the doctor said.
The next hour went by in a flash. Nick remembered gathering around Heath’s body and the doctor going to the control console of the life support system. The next thing he knew, a solid beep rang clear and loud in the room and Mrs. Simmons collapsed into her husband’s arms sobbing hysterically. The doctor took out his stethoscope and put it on Heath’s chest. He was silent for a moment before declaring Heath dead.
There was no more left to be said. Nick went home and locked himself in his room, hardly ever taking a meal. It wasn’t till a week later at Heath’s funeral that he actually talked to people. The funeral went by slowly. Al he could remember were the silent tears and the droning of the priest as the casket was lowered into the ground.
Chapter 3- A Look Into the Past
Nick snapped back from his visions of that horrible ordeal and began to cry. Immediately afterwards he began to think about how it had all started…
Placer Elementary School 3 years ago
The students of Mrs. Reader’s 7th grade class ran out the door as the recess bell rang. Nick and Heath walked out of the class and started talking.
“So, what do you want to do?” Nick asked Heath.
“Wanna go play some football before we have to go back to class?” Heath responded.
“Yeah, that sounds cool, let’s go get Steve, Nathan, and Brian so we can actually form a team,” Nick said.
The two walked off over the black asphalt of the recess area to the benches under the shade of the huge mulberry trees. When they arrived they found a group of their friends sitting around talking.
“Hey guys, wanna go play some football?” Nick asked.
“Sure,” Steve, Brian, and Nathan answered in unison.
They went down to the field and got a ball. After about 15 minutes the bell rang, signaling the end of recess and the beginning of second period. They were all sweating and a little dirty from the grass stains. They walked up the field and went to their classes. The class passed very slowly and they were relieved to hear the lunch bell ring 2 hours later. Nick and Heath got a seat at the same table as the other three guys and began to eat.
“So, what are you guys doing this weekend,” Nick asked.
“I’m going surf boarding in San Diego,” Brian said.
“I’m going with Brian,” Steven said.
“I’m taking all of next week off to visit some relatives in England,” Nathan said.
“Wow, you are so lucky. I’ve never even gotten to leave the country before,” Steven said.
“I’m not doing anything this weekend, what about you Nick?” Heath replied.
“Same here, wanna some over and spend it over at my house?” Nick asked.
“Sure, that’d be great. When do you want me over?” Heath replied.
“Um, how about 4:00 P.M.?” Nick asked.
“I’ll be there,” Heath said.
They sat and talked about small things until the end of lunch, then they went to their final classes. At the end of the day Heath and Nick said goodbye.
“Hey, I’ll see you at 4,” Nick said.
“Ok. Bye,” Heath replied.
Nick got home and decided he should pick out some movies for tonight. He went through his collection and decided on a good porno, knowing his parents would be gone until very late.
At 4:00 Heath arrived with a sleeping bag and a small suitcase of clothes.
“Hey man,” Nick greeted him.
“Hey, whats up?” Heath asked.
“Nothing, come in,” Nick said.
Heath walked in and set his stuff on the couch.
“So, what do you want to do?” Nick asked.
“I dunno, its up to you,” Heath replied.
“Well, my parents aren’t going to be home till Sunday night and my brother and sister decided to go camping for the weekend, so we can do pretty much anything we want,” Nick said happily.
“Ok, cool,” Heath said.
“Wanna watch some porn? I picked out a good one before you got here,” Nick asked.
“Ok, sure,” Heath said trying to be convincing.
You see, underneath the all-American guy appearance, and the talk about always wanting to fuck girls, Heath had a secret, a secret that he thought would destroy his social life if it got out, he was gay.
“Ok, cool, let me go get it,” Nick said as he began to run up the stairs to his room.
As Nick ran up the stairs Heath watched as his friend’s athleticly toned body caused his clothes to ripple, showing off the definition of his muscles. Heath found that a feeling was stirring deep inside him. A minute later Nick slid down the banister, tape in hand. The two walked into Nick’s living room and popped the tape into the big screen t.v. The image of a tall, blonde haired guy licking a red-headed girls tits popped onto the screen.
“This is so hot,” Heath tried to act.
“I know, this is my favorite one,” Nick said.
The two watched for a couple more minutes until Heath noticed Nick rubbing a large bulge in his pants. Instantly, Heath got a bone from seeing this.
“Hey, man, you don’t mind if get some relief here, do you?” Nick asked Heath motioning to his crotch.
“No, not at all, I’m probably gonna need some myself,” Heath said trying to hide his glee of seeing Nick jack off.
Nick smiled and began to undo his pants, slowly unzipping the zipper and unbuttoning it. He slid his shorts down to his ankles showing his tented boxer briefs. Then, he began to lower them…
Chapter 4- A Look Into the Past Continued
As the light blue boxer-briefs slip down Nick’s legs, Heath silently sucked in a breath. Nick kept his eyes on the screen as he began to play with his cock. Soon it was rock-hard and oozing pre-cum. Heath had gotten quite aroused and was vigorously struggling to cover the proof.
“Oh god! This is the best man!” Nick said as he stroked furiously.
“Calm down there cowboy,” Heath joked, trying to stay cool.
Five minutes later Nick had an explosive climax. His cum flew 5 feet in the air as he moaned loudly. Nick looked over at Heath with slightly glazed eyes and asked why he hadn’t relieved himself.
“Not in the mood,” Heath quickly mumbled.
They put up the movie and decided to do something different. They went up to Nick’s room and played a game of chess, then cards, then dominoes… after a couple of hours had passed they were both quite bored.
“So, what do you want to do now?” Heath asked.
“I dunno… Truth or Dare?” Nick suggested.
“ummm. Ok,” Heath nervously agreed, scared that one wrong move would blow his cover.
“Okay, cool. Let’s start,” Nick said.
They sat cross-legged on the floor and started their game.
“Truth or dare?” Nick started.
“Uhhh, truth,” Heath replied.
“Wimp.. Ummm…..do you jack off?” Nick asked.
“Yeah, and so does every other teenager on this planet,” Heath replied.
“Ok, your turn,” Nick said.
“Truth or dare?” Heath asked.
The game continued and, being boys, they made it get more and more interesting as it progressed… until…
“What is your biggest secret?” Nick asked with a goofy grin.
“Uhhhh…Come on that’s no fair!” Heath said, afraid that this would happen.
“Ah ah ah, you have to answer,” Nick joked.
“Oh my god. Ok, I will tell you Nick. But only because you are my best friend in the whole world, ok?” Heath said, knowing that there would be no escaping it sooner or later.
“Ok, you can trust me,” Nick said honestly.
“Ok, first promise me that you will not freak or get mad, ok?” Heath said as he turned beet red.
“promise,” Nick confirmed.
“Ok, here goes <sigh> Nick… this is so hard for me to say…I never wanted it to get out, but its time that I told you, and I know I can trust you with anything…Nick, I’m gay,” Heath said as he dropped his head ad prepared for a bad response.
There was a silence so long that it was like watching Titanic on mute. Then finally Nick spoke again.
“Heath, I need to think about this for a minute, k?” Nick said as he walked out of the room.
<oh god, I knew it. I’ve just ruined our friendship> Heath thought as he was about to cry.
Nick came back in the room 10 minutes later.
“Ok, heath, I’ve thought about what you said and I think its time for me to tell you something also. I’m gay too.” Nick said quickly and extremely scared.
Yet again, silence.
“What? You’re joking!” Heath practically yelled.
“No, i’m not. And there’s more… I like you,” Nick said as he turned a deep shade of red.
“Oh my god… Nick…” Heath began.
